686 Origin Story

In 1992, Michael Akira West took the style of Los Angeles skateboarding into Southern California's growing snowboard scene. What started as a college project at USC, first called Jib 686 Enterprises, turned into fleece and jackets, and then into one of snowboarding's best-known outerwear brands. More than 30 years on, 686 is still led by its founder and still mixes technical mountain gear with skate and streetwear style. Read 686's story.

The SMARTY Idea

In 1995, 686 dropped the Jib name and introduced SMARTY, a 3-in-1 system that's still one of its best ideas. You get an outer shell and a removable inner layer that you can wear together on cold days, or on their own when it warms up or when you're off the hill. Check what's included with each SMARTY model, as the inner layer varies.

686 Tech

  • infiDRY: 686's own waterproof and breathable fabric system, which comes in different protection levels. Check the rating and seam taping on each garment.
  • GORE-TEX: used on selected 686 styles.
  • Thermagraph: insulation placed where you need warmth, with breathable zones where you don't, rather than the same insulation all over.

Shell or Insulated?

Our 686 collection lets you choose either way. Shells like the Gateway Shell Jacket and the Ghost 2.5L Anorak keep weather out and let you add or remove layers underneath. Insulated jackets like the Foundation Insulated Jacket and the Women's Whisper Insulated Jacket have warmth built in. The right choice comes down to how cold you run and how varied your days are.

You'll also find 686 gloves, mitts, beanies, fleece and base layers to complete the kit.

686 × HUF Collab

This collab brings together 686's snow know-how and HUF's San Francisco skate heritage. The Double H Shell Jacket has a shorter cut, a two-way anorak zip, 20K infiDRY waterproofing and taped seams, and there's a matching Double H Shell Pant.

The 686 Team

686's riders include Forest Bailey, Hana Beaman, Matt Belzile, Tommy Gesme, Keegan Hosefros and Gigi Rüf, among a wider ski and snowboard team.
