About Afends

Afends started in Byron Bay in 2006, but contrary to what you might imagine it didn't begin strictly as a surf label. Founders Jono Salfield and Declan "Deco" Wise were screen printing merch for punk and hardcore bands, and surfing and skating soon got mixed in with the music. That combination still runs through everything Afends makes: loose streetwear, denim, workwear-inspired pieces and artist-led graphics, with a questioning streak summed up in two long-running mottos, "Question Everything" and "Create Not Destroy".

Hemp Is a Big Part of the Afends Clothing Story

Afends is well known for its work with hemp, alongside organic and recycled fibres. In 2022 it harvested its first hemp crop on its own Sleepy Hollow farm near Byron Bay, a three-acre trial that sent 250 kg of hemp offshore for fibre testing. The brand also names its supply-chain partners in China and India, including hemp specialist Hempfortex in Qingdao, and has run its Byron Bay headquarters, café and warehouse on solar power since 2016. That said, not every Afends clothing piece is pure hemp. Many garments use hemp blends, and others are organic cotton, recycled fibres or other fabrics, so check the composition on the product you're looking at. Fabric weight, weave and wash affect how a piece feels as much as the fibre does.
