Step On® Bindings

Yes, Step On® bindings are great. The big win is speed and convenience: no ratchet straps to buckle, just click in and go, which is genuinely handy on resort days when you are doing lots of quick laps and are on and off the lift regularly. Performance-wise, modern Step On systems from Burton and Union hold up well against traditional strap bindings for all-mountain and everyday riding. Some riders still prefer traditional strap bindings for fine-tuned response, but for the vast majority of riders, Step On bindings perform brilliantly.

"Best" is genuinely subjective here, it comes down to your boots, your riding style and your budget rather than one binding type beating all others. The generic term "Step-in" is sometimes used to describe the strapless binding type, while Step On® is the official name for the modern system. Quest carries Step On® bindings from Burton and Union, both very well regarded, and the right one for you is whichever pairs best with boots that fit you properly. Yes. Step On® bindings only work with Step On® boots that have the matching connection points built into the boot (at the toe and heel), so you can't use regular snowboard boots with them. Quest stocks Step On® boots alongside the bindings, and our team can help make sure your boots and bindings pair up properly before you buy.

Yes. Step On® is a shared connection system, and Union's Step On bindings are built to the same standard as Burton's, so they're designed to work interchangeably. A Union Step On binding will click into a Burton Step On boot, and a Burton Step On binding will take a Union Step On boot, just as easily as staying within one brand. It's still worth confirming your exact boot and binding models with our team in-store, but cross-brand compatibility is the whole point of the shared Step On® system.

Step On boots have three connection points built into the boot itself. Two toe cleats, one on each side of the boot at the forefoot, hook into the toe of the binding, and one heel cleat at the back of the boot locks into the heel cup on the highback. Step down and the cleats click into place, no straps or buckles required. To release, you lift a small lever on the heel cup, which unlocks the heel cleat so you can step out. The step out requires you to lift your heel and twist your foot to the side, not that different to existing a ski binding.

Step On® can be great for beginners because it makes it easy to get in and out of your bindings. Many new riders love how quick and easy Step On bindings are, especially in the first few days when you're getting on and off the lift a lot. Others prefer the adjustability of traditional straps while they're still building confidence and edge control. If you're just starting out, it's worth trying both in-store so you know which feels right before you commit.

Generally, yes, modern Step On systems have come a long way and perform well across most conditions, powder included. The one thing to keep in mind is that snow and ice can build up around the connection points in deep or wet snow, so it pays to give your boots a quick clear before clicking in. But then this is no different to keeping the snow out of your regular strap bindings.

You don't have to stick to one brand. Step On® is a shared connection standard rather than a brand-specific one, so Step On boots and bindings from different manufacturers are generally designed to work together. Not dramatically. Your foot still sits in the boot and the footbed just like a regular strap-in setup. But instead of straps Step On boots have three connection points built into the boot itself: two toe cleats, one on each side of the boot at the forefoot, that hook into the toe of the binding, and one heel cleat at the back of the boot that locks into the heel cup on the highback. Because the boot needs to hold itself securely at these points without any straps, the forefoot and heel areas are built a bit stronger and more structured than on a regular boot, which is what can make Step On boots feel very slightly stiffer and snugger around the heel. Most riders don't notice much difference once they're used to it, and the connection points themselves are built to handle repeated clicking in and out without issue.

In most cases, yes, you can keep your current board. Step On bindings mount the same way as traditional bindings, using either a standard 2x4 insert pattern or Burton's channel system, so switching to Step On is generally just a bindings (and boots) decision rather than a whole new board. The one exception is splitboards, where you'll need Step On bindings built for the Voilé splitboard mounting pattern rather than a standard board mount.
