Off the Wall Since 1966

Vans opened as the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California on 16 March 1966, founded by brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren with Gordon Lee and Serge Delia. Its first shoe, the #44 deck shoe, is what we now call the Authentic. Southern California skaters loved the grippy waffle sole, and Vans has been building shoes for them ever since, along with snowboard boots for more than 30 years. Read the story of Vans.

A Quick Vans Timeline

  • 1976: the Era is developed with Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, and the "Off the Wall" logo appears.
  • 1977: the Old Skool introduces the Sidestripe, and the Classic Slip-On arrives.
  • 1978: the Sk8-Hi joins the range.
  • 1992: the Half Cab makes official what skaters were already doing: cutting down Steve Caballero's high-top signature shoe.
  • 1993/94: Vans starts making snowboard boots.
  • 1995: the Warped Tour partnership begins.

Classic or Skate: What's the Difference?

A Classic Old Skool and a Skate Old Skool look almost identical, but they aren't built the same. Skate Classics add features like DURACAP reinforcement in high-wear areas, POPCUSH footbeds for cushioning and, on some models, SICKSTICK rubber for grip. If you're skating a lot, the "Skate" name and the spec list on the product matter more than the silhouette. If they're for everyday wear, the Classic versions are the original icons.

Vans Snowboard Boots

Vans has invested a lot in the Vans snowboard boot line to create some of the most popular and technical boots around. The Infuse, for example, uses a Hybrid Plus BOA Custom Fit System, Flex Control System, Powercuff strap and V3 POPCUSH footbed, and Quest also carries models like the Hi-Standard Pro and Aura Pro.

With heavy hitters on the Vans' snowboard team, like Arthur Longo, Blake Paul, Bryan Iguchi, Hana Beaman, Jamie Lynn, Jake Kuzyk, Jill Perkins, Kennedi Deck, Mia Brookes and Sam Taxwood...you know they are doing a lot right.

Obviously snowboard boot fit is super important for a good days riding, so we always recommend going instore to try the boots to make sure they are the right fit.
